  15. <p>     DIED. KAKUEI TANAKA, 75, former Japanese Prime Minister; of
  16. pneumonia; in Tokyo. After he was elected to the Diet in 1947,
  17. Tanaka used his personal wealth to rise rapidly through the
  18. ranks, becoming at 54 the youngest Prime Minister of postwar
  19. Japan. His popular touch won him wide support--until the economy
  20. worsened under his leadership and the public became less tolerant
  21. of his "money politics." Suspicions of shady financial dealings
  22. forced his 1974 resignation. In 1983 Tanaka was sentenced to
  23. four years in prison for taking a $2 million bribe, though he
  24. never served a day in prison, and his corrupt legacy still shadows
  25. Japanese politics.
